Located just off the northeast coast of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands are the perfect excuse to take a boat and take a fun day trip. The Volcanic Archipelago includes a total of seven islands, the largest of which is Lipari.
The eponymous town of this island is known for its historic castle on top of a hill in the center of an archaeological site. Come here to see ancient ruins, but also to enjoy an incredible panoramic view.
If you are more interested in natural monuments than historical ruins, visit The Island of Vulcano. Follow a hiking trail to the top of a volcano and enjoy a surreal view of a crater and the neighboring islands. The southern coast of Vulcano offers black sand beaches, while the western coast offers caves and grottoes. Overall, there’s a lot to do and see in the Aeolian Islands, and you could easily spend more than a day driving from one waterfront village to another if you had the time.
